Charlie Kirk
What is behind his sacrifice?
The news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination on Wednesday September 10th transformed the tone of my birthday. I heard about it from a friend I was on the phone with. What an incredibly tragic event - it felt like the fabric of common sense itself was torn by violence.
You don’t have to agree with his politics; the pictures of his 3 and 5 year old children running into his arms with joy and love make any differences seem petty.
What concerns us here is the supernatural aspect of this event. For anyone paying attention, something dramatic occurred in the etheric world.
We witnessed several things: an outpouring of grief and sadness, which was palpable as millions soberly reflected on his life and mission, and took comfort from his message. There were also those who celebrated and made fun of his death. One would hope these were rare, but approximately 200,000 did so publicly. Conspicuously absent were riots and violent protests from Kirk’s supporters.
What made Charlie Kirk such a controversial figure? What did he say that inspired outright hatred? Well, as an avowed Conservative and Christian, he had opinions on the various hot-button topics of the day. For example, he was against man interfering with the divinely ordered process of souls incarnating on earth. He maintained there are no circumstances where it is ok to sterilize and surgically alter a child so they can become the other sex. Charlie was also passionate about the right of a society to be consulted about which people will join it. Perhaps most controversially, regarding same sex parenting, he felt the right of a child to a mother and father supersedes the right of the adults to have a child.
Further, Charlie believed the antidote to wrong ideas was better ideas and open debate rather than censorship. And above all, he said we should try to make Christ the center of our lives.
This is how his message was interpreted by his opponents:
He was anti-gay and anti-trans rights.
He was anti-women’s rights.
He wanted to force his religion on everyone.
He was racist and anti-immigration.
And above all, he spread hate.
Far be it from me to analyze this starkest of contrasts for you. I personally don’t know the answers to all of the questions he asked, but at least he had arguments for them. After much searching, the majority of arguments I can find from his detractors were that ‘he was wrong’ and ‘he was hateful’. Exceptions were from rhetoricians who criticized him for sometimes using gotcha-style debate tactics, or for focusing on extreme outliers in movements he criticized.
What I can say is that I was struck by his commitment to sitting down with those he disagreed with and inviting them to debate with him. Prove me wrong, he said. I did listen to a lot of these debates, and was hard pressed to find an instance of Charlie ‘spreading hate’. Anyway, are we really so simple that listening to a conversation will turn us into hateful people? The impression one is left with is that he cared deeply about human life, truth and goodness and wanted to win others over to his point of view.
Charlie Kirk was not killed because he was Conservative, he was killed because he loved his enemies. The adversary does not understand this, and so hates it. The striving for understanding and love, the kernel of present day evolution, is based on one thing - inner freedom. Freedom is the antithesis of what we term as ‘identity’, identifying with this or that, jumping on one bandwagon after another without really thinking about it. And loving one’s enemies means only one thing - inner freedom. It is easy to love the ones who love us back.
The unfolding of the Consciousness Soul is what we are in the middle of today. Striving against the many forces which try to keep us from recognizing our true human nature, it is this which naturally wells up from within; the urge to understand someone, even when we don’t like them. The capacity not to take things personally, to rise above harsh or stupid remarks, is a signifier for Consciousness Soul development.
Did Charlie not do just that, day in and day out? Did he not break bread with his enemies?
In the hours and days after the shooting, a wave of more than just grief spread over the world. It was as if when he passed over the threshold, Charlie opened a doorway through which all this love and understanding came flooding. Rather than everyone focusing on who was responsible, a greater question should be - could only such a man have been able to spread more compassion through his death than in life?
We know from Rudolf Steiner’s work that when a soul is released into the spiritual world through violence, specific forces and beings become available for those who can perceive them. Sometimes for good, and sometimes for ill. It is a dark reality that historically, assassinations have been staged by occult groups in order to manipulate the forces released, and use them for purposes not in alignment with human evolution. 1
He spoke at length about such assassinations and secret, highly disciplined occult orders. The way they operated was to try to gain knowledge that was ahead of its time - to use in their attempts to steer world history. Normally, new spiritual understanding comes to humanity organically and at the appropriate time. Through the violent death of a human being, these impulses can be pulled from the future and ‘captured’ by the occult groups. The soul of the person who has died, having access to life forces which they had not used up in the natural course of life, could be able to perceive certain secrets or spiritual knowledge on the other side and instill them into mediums or sensitive individuals back on earth. The knowledge would then be used to influence future events and trends. The systematic nature of these methods would be ‘horrifying to anyone who has the good of humanity at heart’. Suffice it to say, these people are serious and not to be underestimated.
As Gigi Young rightly points out, these forces try to create chaos and division. That could be seen in the dramatic responses to the event and even the opaque law-enforcement response. But also, we are called to find our humanity. 2
I am going to say that the dark forces who were likely involved here did not succeed, at least not fully. Perhaps they were amateurish, or maybe they were not able to see the acumen of Charlie’s previous lives and efforts which made it possible for him and for the guiding spirits of the world to transform this tragedy into a ‘turning point’ in our collective inner life. Perhaps the millions who grieved rather than rioted played a role as well.
That compassion is still here, for anyone who wants to tap into it or be comforted by it. A noticeable change was made in the living fabric of the earth, and though in the ensuing weeks we have gotten used to it, we would do well not to forget it. The deeper reality of what is happening is not about impending civil unrest, or a resurgence in church attendance, or any of the conspiracies you read about. The gift of Charlie Kirk is a spiritual substance which makes understanding and love easier.
It is like fuel which gives us the strength to love our enemies.

Is there an Anthroposophical view on the 600,000+ people who have died in Africa in 2025 due to removal of medical aid (including from tuberculosis and malaria)?
Beautiful, John. And wisely insightful to write and post it now. And brave.
